About

MORE THAN JUST A ZOO Founded in 1922, the Oakland Zoo is the oldest zoo in Northern California. Created in 1936, the non-profit East Bay Zoological Society just celebrated 75 years of inspiring respect for and stewardship of the natural world, and is looking forward to the promises of the future.

We offer special opportunities for at-risk and under-served students and families through classes, field trips, outdoor overnights, ZooCamp, community days, family vouchers, and collaborative program initiatives.

ENSURING HUMANE ANIMAL CARE At the Oakland Zoo, our animals enjoy excellent care and a quality of life that reflects our dedication to our mission and commitment to every animal. The Zoo is well-respected for providing an environment for rehabilitation and a new life for rescued, native and exotic animals.

A new 17,000-square-foot Veterinary Medical Hospital will treat our 650 animals and help train veterinary students. Most animals live significantly longer in a zoo than they might in the wild, creating unique veterinary care needs. Ongoing support, including quality veterinarians and animal specialists, is essential to care for sick and/or aging animals.

DEEPENING OUR COMMITEMENT TO EDUCATION THROUGH: • Showcasing the amazing diversity of life on Earth to 600,000+ visitors each year.
• Teaching about the plants and animals that live among us through programs at the Zoo and
through our Zoo-to-Community program in the community.
• Working to extend our educational programs to underserved areas throughout the Bay Area.
